The facial form of each woman is important in determining the style of hat chosen. The face can be oval, round, rectangular, square, heart or diamond- shaped. You should take this into consideration when you buy a hat.

A simple way to determine exactly your facial type, is to do the following: tie your hair back if it is long, or smooth it close to the scalp if it is short, then take a photo.

Now, look at the photo and draw a vertical line dividing the face in two. This line is the length. Then draw a horizontal line dividing the face into two halves. This is the width.

If, for some reason you can’t use a photo, you can always look in a mirror and try to imagine the lines, or better still, draw them on the mirror with a lipstick.

After you have defined the lines, look at what type of hat will sit harmoniously with your facial form.

 
OVAL

If the length is about a third longer than the width, and the face is slightly elongated, this is a softly-shaped face with delicate angles.

All hat styles compliment this facial type, but particularly flattering are ones with wide disc shaped brims, or brims which are narrower than the shoulders.

ROUND

This type of face has lines of the same length in height and width. It is shorter than an oval face, with a rounded chin and small forehead. The facial angles are less well defined.

Recommended hats are those which are high-crowned with an irregular brim. To make the face seem longer, it is interesting to use tall decorations like feathers or flowers.

RECTANGULAR

This type of face resembles a rectangle with the forehead and jaw being of the same width. The contour is strong and angular with a straight line between the cheek and the jaw.

Recommended hats for this facial type are those with narrow and possibly up-turned brims.

SQUARE

What distinguishes this type of face is that it has the same dimensions of height and width. However, unlike the round face, the morphology is strong, intense and straight.

The recommended hats have large crowns and asymmetrical brims.

HEART-SHAPED

This type of face has a narrow and pointed chin, with wide cheeks and forehead. Imagine an inverted triangle on the face, with the point being on the chin.

The recommended hats are those which give the impression that the forehead is narrower. Medium brims give the illusion of a less narrow chin. These hats soften the lines of this type of face.

DIAMOND-SHAPED

This type of face is distinguished by a very pointed chin. Unlike a heart- shape, the cheek area is wider, with the forehead and hairline being narrower. The long, straight lines of the jaw narrow slightly towards the chin.

Recommended hats are those with medium brims which give the illusion that the forehead and the chin are less narrow.
